In today’s world, where aesthetic is becoming more and more important every day, amalgam fillings at back of your mouth could easily be replaced with inlay porcelain. Of course, porcelain inlays have many more advantages beyond aesthetics.
Porcelain inlay is a hard, durable, and aesthetic filling placed in the exact shape of the cavity (space after decay has been cleared). They are glued with special cement or bonding method.
Inlay porcelain is applied only to the chewing surface of tooth. Onlay porcelain covers a wider area including cusps.
Advantages of Inlay - Onlay Porcelain
Porcelain filling saves unnecessary tooth loss. Only the cavity is cleared from decay following a set of rules. Next, we take measurement of teeth and prepare a model to send to laboratory. When your porcelain onlay arrives from laboratory it is glued in place. This procedure has a number of advantages, including:
- No cuts, as in regular chrome caps, need to be made on tooth, preventing unnecessary substance loss. Only the decay is cleaned. Missing part of tooth is tightly placed in its space like a glove.
- No colour change over time like composite fillings (matching teeth colour). Colouring agents cannot stick on porcelain.
- Protect teeth against incoming impact with sturdy structure.
- Does not cause visual pollution in your mouth like amalgam fillings do. They are made to match the colour of your teeth and look natural.
- Only two sessions are enough to complete the procedure.
- Polished surface is stick resistant, keeping food pieces and bacteria away, which is more hygienic.
- Porcelain material does not shrink like “polymerization retraction” often observed in composite fillings, hence you will not develop any kind of hot/cold sensitivity, and no recurring decay, either.
Missing part of teeth with significant matter loss, especially after root canal procedure, can be replaced with porcelain onlay utilizing adhesive systems.
